Project 3 - Product Development
E-commerce is a way for businesses to sell things online, reaching people all around the world without needing a physical store. Because of this, it’s important for students to learn how to create and manage an online store. In this project, students will get real experience making an e-commerce store using tools like WordPress and WooCommerce. They’ll learn how to make product categories, add products, make their store look good, and follow the best ways to set up their product pages.
This project also lets students be creative with their online store. They’ll learn the technical skills needed to make a store, but they’ll also have the chance to write interesting product descriptions, pick great product pictures, and come up with a special identity for their store. By focusing on what customers want, students will learn how to show the value of their products and stand out from other stores. Overall, this project will help students improve their marketing, design, and communication skills, which are all important for being successful in today’s online world.
In this assignment, you’ll be adding a bunch of products to your online store. You’ll need to find awesome pictures and descriptions to make your e-commerce shop stand out. Your store should have 4 product categories, and each category should have 4 products, making a total of 16 products. You’ve already set up “woocommerce.” Now, it’s time to make sure it works well and fill it with great products. Add four (4) categories and put four (4) products in each one.
Give some information about each category to help your customers understand what it’s about. For every product, include a well-written description and nice pictures that go well with the rest of the items in your store. Be creative with your descriptions and focus on the feelings or reasons why someone should buy the product, not just what it is. Southern Fabric, for example, could improve their descriptions, as they mostly just describe the product. Do some basic searches to see how other companies are developing their product descriptions. Notice how the pictures on Southern Fabric and Red Dress look similar to each other in their style.
Project Requirements
You will need to:
- Create at least four product categories
- Add four products to each category
- Add picture(s) to each product.
- Add a product description to each product.
- Add a price point to each product.
Step 1 – Research and Organize Your Products
-
Do your research first. Come up with at least four product categories and find four products that can go into each category. Look for products that fit well within each category. Make sure the products are unique and appealing to potential customers. Remember, products should ship easily, be durable, and not be too expensive.
-
Start creating product titles and product descriptions. Do this outside of WordPress. Write creative product descriptions. Focus on the feelings or reasons why someone should buy the product, rather than just describing the product itself.
-
Collect high quality product images. Try to find images that go well with your site. Search for high-resolution images of each product. Ensure the images have a consistent style and look good together.
Step 2 – Categories First
-
Create your categories first, make sure you also create a ‘slug’ for each category.
-
Woocommerce – Products – Categories (make sure you have a good name, slug, and description for each category).
Step 3 – Create Your Products
-
In the left-hand menu, hover over “Products” and click on “Add New.” This will take you to the “Add New Product” page.
-
Enter the product title in the first field at the top of the page.
-
In the large text box below the title, you can add a detailed description of the product. This description will appear on the individual product page.
-
Scroll down to the “Product Data” section. Here, you can set various options for your product, such as:
-
Choose the product type (Simple, Grouped, External/Affiliate, or Variable)
-
Set the price, including regular and sale prices
-
Manage inventory by entering the stock quantity and allowing or disallowing backorders
-
Set shipping options, including weight, dimensions, and shipping class
-
Add product attributes and variations (if it’s a variable product)
-
On the right-hand side of the page, you will find the “Product Categories” section. Here, you can assign the product to one or more categories.
-
Below the categories, you’ll see the “Product Tags” section. Add relevant tags to help users find your product more easily.
-
In the “Product Image” section, click on “Set product image” to upload a main product image. This image will be displayed on the product listing and individual product pages.
-
Optionally, you can add more images to the “Product Gallery” section by clicking on “Add product gallery images.” These images will be displayed as thumbnails on the product page and can be clicked on to view a larger version.
-
Once you’ve filled in all the necessary information, click the “Publish” button on the top right of the page to make the product live on your site.
I like to duplicate my product when it is finished. This way I can see the format of the title, description, and images and edit them for the new product. Remember to always double-check your product information and images for accuracy and consistency before publishing.
Step 4 – Double Check Product Categories
Make sure you edit your product categories and add them to your “main menu”. You should be able to see your product categories from all of your pages.
